When Sam woke, it was in a bed that wasn't his own and without his dad or brother in sight... needless to say, there was a lot of freaking out. He fumbled out of bed and went looking through the apartment he was in... only to find a dog and not much else. Nothing that would tell him where he was anyway or where Dad or Dean was, when they'd be back.

He even got desperate enough to grab the phone and try their numbers... only to find them no longer in use which was just... even weirder. Now he was even more worried.

"What kinda perks?" He kept scratching the pup flopped over on him. And really, Sam at this age wouldn't have guessed anything... was going on between them, really. He might figure it's a little weird when he realizes the only bedroom in the house was the one he woke up in.

So, right now, seemed the best thing to tease Dean for (and what likely was a 'perk' anyway) was pretty obvious. "Is it all the numbers you get at the bar? Or do you actually have a girlfriend?"

Though if Dean didn't do meeting parents, he doubted he did girlfriends... unless a lot had changed since then.

Oh yeah. He was so not going there. Sam would run screaming from the apartment or something.

"Well, there's Ozzy here." He patted the pup lightly. "And I get to spend time with my dork brother." He grinned.

"I do get a lot of numbers, though, dude. Tons. The chicks here know what a good catch looks like."

He probably would... there'd be quite a major freak out there.

He snorted, smiling despite himself. He gave him a nudge. "I'm not a dork, dean."

But it was cool that they lived together still, spent time together even.

"Please." He rolled his eyes. "You're a jerk, Dean, not a catch." But the teasing was good-natured and he couldn't help a curious look, something else occurring to him. "How about me? Do I have a girlfriend or anything? And don't say I'm too dorky."

And then Dean would be the worst brother ever. He'd really rather not do that.

"You're totally a dork, geek-breath." Dean returned the nudge and a hair ruffling for good measure.

Hmm. Awkward question. Instead of skirting around the question, Dean answered with a teasing grin. "You? You're dating a mime down at the river front. She don't say much, but she's got a very impressive figure."

There was a moment that Sam just stared... before he pulled a face and swatted at Dean. "Liar. Should have known you wouldn't be serious."

And Sam was just going to conclude that meant he got way more dates that Dean. Totally.

Because he wasn't a jerkface.

"Anyway, when can we go out?"

Oh, he had to laugh at that reaction. That was too perfect. "Dude! You should have seen your face. I totally had you going for a minute there."

Still grinning, he nodded. "Yeah, okay. Downtown's just five or so blocks from here. We can walk it." He glanced over at the dog whose ears perked up at the word 'walk'. "Wanna go for a walk, Oz?"

Suddenly, there was an excited puppy dancing beside the door.

"You did not!" Maybe for a second. "Jerk."

At least Ozzy was cute, jumping around like that. He grinned a little as he watched him. "Where's his leash and stuff?"

"The harness and leash are in the drawer of that table next to the door. You can cram him into it, if you want. I'm gonna go change out of my work shirt real quick." He got up and headed into the bedroom to do that. And to make sure there was nothing... laying around... that Sam shouldn't see.

"Alright." He settled on the floor after he grabbed the harness and started to work the puppy into it while Dean went to change. Once he had the puppy ready, he got back to his feet and waited for Dean to come out.

Nothing scandalous in the bedroom, thank goodness. Well, nothing that wasn't reasonably well hidden. Dean changed out of his work shirt into a clean t-shirt and returned to the living room. "Nice job. The little guy wiggles so much, we have trouble getting that on him, sometimes."

He pushed the door open to let Sam take Ozzy out ahead of him, then he closed and locked the door behind.

It's a good thing Sam hadn't been inclined to snoop around too much before Dean got home or he might have had some more questions. He looked up, grinning a little at the praise before he went to follow Dean out.

"So, where are we going first?"

Dean will be forever grateful for that, too. There were things hidden in their bedroom that he was not about to explain to any kid Sam's age. Hell, there were kids ten years older than Sam that he didn't want to explain them to, either.

"If we walk straight down this street, we can go through a couple of little park type squares, then we'll pass your book store before we hit downtown."

"Cool." He strayed close to Dean, looking around the area they were walking curiously. "So... we've really settled in here, huh? Like, we have a real home and everything?"

That was about the best news Sam could hear at that age, really.

"Yeah, we're rockin' the normal life, Sammy. All we're missing is the white picket fence." Which Ozzy would love, but Dean would hate for the damn lawn mowing. No thanks. Parks were easier. "It took some adjusting, but we figured it out. You seem really happy with your school and job stuff you've got going on."

"It sounds really nice..." He can't help but be in a good mood either, knowing that one day... he'll actually get what he wants. A normal life, even if it's not until he's older. He even has Dean with him... and that's something he'd wanted too.

"It is. Better than I expected. Never figured I'd make it in the normal world." He led Sam down the sidewalk toward their favorite cafe and Sam's bookstore. Maybe wouldn't take him in, but it would be a nice sight to show him.

"Well, you are a weirdo, Dean. Bet that hasn't changed." He flashed a teasing look, but as soon as he saw the cafe and a book store, he was giving Dean's shirt a tug to get his attention.

"Is that where I work?"

Dean looked down at the tug and over to the store. He nodded, smiling a little. "Yep. That's it, dude. We'd better not go in, though. People will ask a lot of questions."

He offered Sam an apologetic smile. "I can show you the rest of the cool spots, though?"

There was a hint of disappointment that he wouldn't be able to go into the store, but the promise of seeing some other places perked him back up. He nodded. "Okay, Dean... where to first?"
